Lying awake one night in the immediate aftermath of the U.K.’s divisive referendum on its continued membership of the European Union, unable to sleep because of the myriad, eclectic thoughts racing along my neural pathways, I asked the question, “I’ve got all these things I want to say: what should I do?”
A few moments later, the answer came back, “Say them.” Although I had never thought of writing a blog before, doing so somehow seemed to be the natural way in which to say them.
That’s how this blog burst into life. However, since I didn’t have a very clear idea of what I would end up doing with this blog, a difficulty immediately presented itself: what should I call it? My only point of reference was the simple motivation to say the things that were buzzing around my head. Hence the name ‘davesheadblog’. The title (‘The World, the EU & Me’) indicates that I must have had an awareness that I would write about more than the EU. However, now that the bog has drifted away from the referendum (not that there isn’t much more I could say on this topic if time and priority ever permit) into broader areas of politics, philosophy, faith and family history, I think it is time to reassess my purpose. Besides, although anything I write is as some level all about me, on reflection I regret making “me” part of the title.
This is – as someone once said – a moment that has been prepared for. I have decided to take up my own suggestion, made several months ago in the post ‘What Is Truth?’, and retitle this blog ‘Seeking the truth; guided by love’ and rename it ‘truththrulove’. This serves both as a reminder to me of my purpose and an invitation to others to join in by commenting. Truth isn’t something that you can find on your own.
The reason why ‘Seeking the truth; guided by love’ is what I try to do when I write, is because it is at the heart of my faith in Jesus. I have been a reluctant evangelist. I have never believed that you can force or manipulate people into true faith: they have to want to find it. However, having felt the love of God more powerfully in the last year or so than ever before, I now have the confidence to write about my faith. Given that confidence, why wouldn’t I tell people about something that I have found to me both life-changing and life-affirming?
The love of which I speak I discussed in the aforementioned post about truth and will hopefully write about again. To provide a brief summary here, I find myself turning to the words of Frankie Goes To Hollywood (although it is Gabrielle Aplin’s voice that I hear singing them):
The power of love,
a force from above,
cleaning my soul.
Flame on burn desire,
love with tongues of fire,
purge the soul.
Make love your goal.
